We get them like this; I've got some knowledge of mushrooms but I don't know if these are edible. There are bold mushroom gatherers and old mushroom gatherers, the saying goes!
Anyway, they are too wet and far gone to eat even if they were comestibles...

Lucy, thanks. We had the first big invasion of these in our garden and yard two or three years ago, and I tried to identify them without luck. Anyway, they've now deteriorated into a soggy mess here as well.
