Last week I showed you a sneak preview of the latest print that I have been working on. Today I printed out a couple and must say I’m very pleased how this turned out. I plan to finish editioning these tomorrow…

Recently I was rummaging through some of my old etched copperplates and came across this old favourite (centre image). That sent me looking for the few remaining prints that I still have from the edition. I had neglected to document it in my book as it was one of those small prints I would very occasionally make for print sales and for gifts so I had to search in old sketchbooks to recall when I’d made these. It was in the late 90’s during the period I was working on the Paths series.

This sent me on another path to the photo album of our trip to Italy in the fall of 1993 to find the original photo from which the image was created. It was taken on the grounds of an interesting and inspiring Etruscan castle we came across quite serendipitously, San Severa on the west coast north of Rome.

So, I thought some of my curious dear readers might enjoy seeing how a photograph ended up as an etching. If you are interested in a bit more technical information on the process of transferring the image to the plate, please visit this note. When the plate was ready, I inked it in the intaglio and relief method. The dark red-brown ink was rubbed into the deeply etched areas and top face or relief was wiped clean. Then with a hard roller the blue-green colour was rolled on the relief areas. Finally it was hand printed on an etching press onto paper.

Falling behind as I am with my blog posting here, I offer my faithful readers a little sneak peek at what is currently keeping me very busy. This is a section of a work in progress for what I hope will be the next Fragments print. It may still change, so, onward!

origins

detail from FRAGMENTS II

I keep thinking about my deep fascination for my own origins, of the origins of the Finno-Ugrics, and of all humans. I’m understanding more and more that this is at the very root of my fascination and passion for the traces left behind by these early people on rocks and cave walls, in their sculptures, standing stones, dolmens, pottery, jewelry and so on. And this passion naturally translates into my own art work.

Casually browsing through some of my archives, I came across this almost forgotten post from 2007 which really resonates for me at this moment, especially the above passage.

Back at the printmaking studio after several months’ absence, I am revisiting the last prints I finished, especially the FRAGMENTS pieces. I am gathering thoughts, ideas, feelings along with possible relevant images from my massive files as I plan new work. It is a process I need to go through, a kind of evaluation of past work and finding the connecting threads to carry forth as I move into the new.

UPDATE Sept.23rd, 2011: The Fragments category is now up under Printworks. I will add more works as they are created and completed. Thanks to Marly for the question in the comments, it has spurred me on to remind my designer daughter to help add that category at long last.

This is one of the group of prints that I had written concerning my naming struggles. I finally did settle on titles. I still don’t know if they will become part of a larger series in future and what that series will be called until that work has been made – perhaps even FRAGMENTS. So at this moment I’m in a dilemma in placing them into a category on this blog as well as in the gallery/slide show. I’m thinking of “New Works” but when that changes, my links will break…decisions, decisions…

This also comes in a smaller version: about 25 x 20 cm. (10″ x 8″) and is called ‘this small place’. It was one of three prints of mine that were accepted into the BIMPE VI exhibition last year. I recently received the catalogue – a most impressive publication!
