As I wrote in the spring along with a poster image, our Art Insitute printmakers group had an exciting exhibition at the B-Gallery in Tokyo. I was lucky during the show to capture one photo from the gallery’s site before it was gone so I’ve been eagerly looking forward to seeing more, as have all the artists who were not there. Today Michiko Suzuki, one of the artists who was there in person, wrote that the exhibition was successful, well attended and well received. She kindly sent many opening and installation photos to share here. Enjoy!

I want to add the artist’s names under their images, and though I know many of them, I’m not sure of all, so shall add that information sometime later when I get to see the catalogue.

postcard art fundraiser

Rathje_Astuvansalmi_CarfacBC.jpg

I first wrote about this fundraiser, Wish You Were Here, a few weeks ago. It is an inaugural event put on by CARFAC BC for artists. Everyone is welcome to attend the event on Friday, June 22nd at W2 Community Media Arts Society, #250-111 W. Hastings (the Woodwards Atrium) in downtown Vancouver between 10 am to 7 pm.

An attractive website has been created, so please check out all the work by BC artists. You will find my pieces under ‘printmaking’. Four of them are etchings, one called “Astuvansalmi” is an inkjet print (also shown above). If you can’t make it to the event in person, online purchases are welcomed. All works are $50, with half going to the artist. Payment will be accepted on-line beginning June 22 accompanied with an email to bc@carfac.ca outlining the title of the piece you want and the name of the respective fine artist. We all hope you will find something of interest to add to your collection or to give as gifts, in support of “the creative economy of Fine Artists from your very own ‘hood. Your support can ensure that BC fine artists will not be another industry replaced by technology and disappearing into history.”

UPDATE July 2nd, 2012. Due to popular demand, this fundraiser is extended until July 30th, 2012 to encourage more on-line sales. The website has been updated to reflect artworks that have been sold. I am sorry to note that this is open to Canadian and US residents only, I suppose because of mailing costs.

Perhaps you remember my earlier post about our Art Institute group’s print exhibition in Japan? Here is a screen shot of the installation at the B-Gallery in Tokyo. My piece Fragments IV is second from the left. I can hardly wait to hear reports and see more photos from the artists who were present at the exhibition opening!

Added later: Here are more photos of our exhibition.

Wish You Were Here

This is for artists in British Columbia….

I have just put together my little package of prints to mail to CARFAC BC’s inaugural postcard fundraiser called Wish You Were Here. If you are a member, or wish to join if you are an artist in BC, you are invited to send in up to 5 works in your choice of suitable media on a 5″ x 7″ surface. Deadline is June 8th, 2012. This event is taking place on Friday, June 22 at Woodward’s Atrium, 111 West Hastings Street, Vancouver from 10 AM – 6 PM. Please read more about it at the link, join in and tell your friends to come and purchase small art works.

If you are an artist in Canada, you are likely already familiar with CARFAC, the Canadian Artist’s Representation, with each province having their own provincial chapter. I have long been a member as this is a most worthwhile organization working on artists’ behalf on many issues. Check it out.

exhibition in Japan

Japanese-Poster-Web.jpg

Just received this beautiful poster about our Art Institute Printmaking group’s exhibition coming up for May 29th to June 14th at the B-Gallery in Tokyo, Japan.

Huge thanks go to one of the artists, Michiko Suzuki originally from Tokyo, for her generous efforts in acquiring the gallery for our exhibition and for carrying all our work with her on her flight to Japan. (She has frequented these pages often, please search if interested.)

I’m hoping we shall see some images of our show on the gallery’s site once it is up for the benefit of those (most) of us who will not be there, and for readers. As more information comes in, I will add it here or in another post.

As an exchange, works by several Japanese printmakers will be exhibited in the Studio Art Gallery at Capilano University in North Vancouver during the month of October this year. Exciting times!

More, August 28th: Exhibition photos at last!

and Capilano University President Dr. Kris Bulcroft.

Our exhibition opening at CityScape last night was excellent and very well attended, so much so that it was difficult to take photos of the work, especially in the rear section of the space where the table of wine and nibblies attracted everyone to linger. Our work looked great in the space. There were speeches by several people – was I ever thrilled to have my work behind them – what a photo op!

From the Press Release:

A diverse printmaking exhibition by members of the Art Institute of Capilano University that explores a microcosm of dynamic changes occurring in international print culture, especially with regard to the digital revolution.

Through these processes, the artists explore the surfaces and possibilities of scale, embossments, enamels, rare Japanese Gampi papers and metallic surfaces.

The exhibition will showcase diverse images and concepts- every thing from environmental issues, technology and the human condition to the creative act, music and ecology.

The exhibiting artists are: Hans-Christian Behm, Katie Dey, Wayne Eastcott, Roger Fidler, Peter Frey, Orianne Johnson, Bonnie Jordan, Christel Kleinewillinghoefer, Marja-Leena Rathje, Linda Robertson, Joan Smith, Michiko Suzuki, Francis Tremblay.

This also comes in a smaller version: about 25 x 20 cm. (10″ x 8″) and is called ‘this small place’. It was one of three prints of mine that were accepted into the BIMPE VI exhibition last year. I recently received the catalogue – a most impressive publication!

Please also see these related works: ‘this place’ #2 and ‘this place’ #3.

BIMPE VI exhibition

BIMPE-VI.jpg

Design: Cloe Aigner, Print: “Bite your Tongue” by Jen McGowan, intaglio

Everyone is invited to the opening for The Sixth Biennial International Miniature Print Exhibition (BIMPE) on Saturday, September 11th, 2010 from 6 to 9 pm. at the Federation Gallery on Granville Island, 1241 Cartwright Street, Vancouver, BC.
As the BIMPE site explains:

The Biennial International Miniature Print Exhibition (BIMPE) is held every two years in Vancouver, British Columbia. This exhibition is a showcase for small scale works measuring no more than 15cm × 10cm, and is open to images made using all printmaking techniques from traditional line etching to contemporary digital processes.

I’m very pleased to have my work chosen along with that by numerous (about 200?!) other artists from around the world. Many of the names are known to me, a few I know personally such as the artist whose delightful print was chosen for the invitation above. As I’ve mentioned before, I rarely do small works so this year it was a timely opportunity for me to support this local biennial of prints.

This exhibition will be at the Federation Gallery until the end of September, then moves for the month of October to Dundarave Print Workshop, also located on Granville Island. In November, it travels to Edmonton’s SNAP Gallery.

UPDATE October 30th, 2013: While cleaning up dead links on old posts, I have discovered BIMPE now has its own site with pages for each biennal. Check out the fantastic PDF version of the catalogue!

a great day on Bowen

What a fantastic day we had yesterday! The gloriously sunny day began with the arrival of a cousin and her husband from Germany. After a quick visit over tea and biscotti on our deck, we whisked them to the ferry over to Bowen Island. Hans-Christian, one of the artists in the exhibition and a resident of the island, invited all the artists and their guests for pre-show nibbles and wine at his home. How lovely it was on his deck looking out over the sea, getting ourselves in a mellow mood for the reception to come. What was very unusual was how many German speakers were present: three of the artists including our host, and three visitors from Germany, plus my husband! Our daughter Erika was enjoying practicing her German with them but I was quite lost beyond the pleasantries.

Anne and I in front of some of my work

Then on to The Gallery at Artisan Square to see our exhibition and be there for the artists’ reception. I was immediately greeted by a beautiful lady – Anne Wadleigh, the amazing 20th Century Woman and her husband Jerry! How delightful that they made it and how honoured I felt that they had made the trip up from their island on the other side of the border in Washington! Though this was our first meeting face to face, Anne and I felt like we’d known each other a long time. Jerry and my husband found many things of common interest while Anne and I talked about printmaking. With her own background in printmaking, Anne had many perceptive questions and comments and was interested to learn about the Capilano University Art Institute. Anne expressed the desire to be able to work in such a place and be inspired by other printmakers. I look forward to another visit one day and to showing her our facilities.

The opening was very well attended and the work well received. It was hard to get good installation photos but the show looked great in this lovely space. Our special thanks to Ann Ramsay, Gallery Coordinator/Curator for giving us this wonderful opportunity to share our works with Bowen Island residents and visitors. Thanks to my husband for taking all the photos, also Erika though I haven’t seen hers yet.

Then a lovely ferry ride home again. I was a little tired from all the excitement and had dinner to prepare (thankfully I’d prepared the main dish the day before). Our family circle around the table was larger and richer with the German cousins and we were grateful for this wonderful day.
